Antibalas is an American afrobeat ensemble formed in Brooklyn in 1998 by Martín Perna. Its horn-led music draws on funk, jazz and Latin rhythms, while albums including Liberation Afro Beat Vol. 1, Talkatif and Who Is This America? established the group’s recorded catalogue. The group made its live debut at St. Nick’s Pub in Harlem in 1998, then built recurring nights at NoMoore in Manhattan and Afrospot in Brooklyn. Members later performed in the band for the Broadway musical Fela!, whose run at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre placed their command of Fela Kuti’s music inside a theatrical production.
