Ata Kak in Newcastle upon Tyne

Ata Kak is a Ghanaian singer, rapper and keyboard player known for “Obaa Sima,” the title track of a cassette album he recorded while living in Toronto and released in Ghana in 1994. Its rapid vocals, electronic rhythms and highlife-inflected melodies found a new audience after the recording was rediscovered and reissued by Awesome Tapes From Africa. In 2016, Ata Kak began performing the music of “Obaa Sima” with a live band. He appeared at Primavera Sound in Barcelona and later presented the same band-led repertoire at Dekmantel in Amsterdam.
