Burnt Sugar The Arkestra Chamber is an American experimental ensemble founded in New York City in 1999 by writer and musician Greg Tate. Its music draws on jazz improvisation, funk, rock and soul, organized through the conducted-improvisation method developed by Butch Morris. The group’s recordings include Blood on the Leaf, the That Depends on What You Know series and Making Love to the Dark Ages. The David Bowie Songbook brought the ensemble to Lincoln Center Out of Doors for a concert of radically rearranged Bowie compositions. Burnt Sugar The Arkestra Chamber has also presented its large, changing lineup at experimental-music venue Roulette, where conductors shape the performance through gestures and real-time cues. That conducted ensemble format remains central to its appearances at Roulette in Brooklyn.
