Gov't Mule is an American rock band formed in 1994 by guitarist and singer Warren Haynes, bassist Allen Woody and drummer Matt Abts. Its music draws on blues rock, Southern rock and extended improvisation; key recordings include Dose, the two-volume The Deep End project, “Mule,” “Thorazine Shuffle” and “Beautifully Broken.” Live at Roseland Ballroom documented an early trio performance in Manhattan. The Deepest End concert at the Saenger Theatre in 2003 then brought many of the bassists who had contributed to The Deep End records to New Orleans. At Boston's Orpheum Theatre in 2008, the band played the Halloween performance later released as Dark Side of the Mule, built around songs by Pink Floyd. New Year's Eve concerts later became a recurring engagement at New York's Beacon Theatre.
JJ Grey & Mofro is an American roots-rock band from Jacksonville, Florida, led by singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist JJ Grey. The group plays Southern rock, blues, soul and funk, and first recorded under the name Mofro. Its best-known work includes the albums Lochloosa and Country Ghetto, and the songs “The Sun Is Shining Down,” “Brighter Days” and “Lochloosa.” The 2011 live album and concert film Brighter Days documents a full-band performance at Atlanta’s Variety Playhouse. In 2015, JJ Grey & Mofro joined Tedeschi Trucks Band and Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings for the inaugural Wheels of Soul Tour. The band has performed at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival on the Gulf Coast. Its festival appearances have also included Bonnaroo in Manchester, Tennessee.
