Jose Merce in Jerez de la Frontera

Jose Merce is a Spanish flamenco singer, born José Soto Soto in Jerez de la Frontera in 1955. A member of the Sordera flamenco family, he sings traditional cante as well as flamenco shaped by pop arrangements. His best-known recordings include Del amanecer, made with guitarist Vicente Amigo, Aire and his interpretation of “Al alba.” At 13, he began singing at the Torres Bermejas tablao in Madrid, then joined Antonio Gades’s dance company and toured internationally with the troupe. His subsequent solo concerts took flamenco into major theatres, including Madrid’s Teatro Real.
