A Guy Called Gerald in London

A Guy Called Gerald is the recording name of British electronic musician Gerald Simpson, who emerged from Manchester’s acid-house scene and was an early member of 808 State. His 1988 solo single “Voodoo Ray” became his signature track; albums including 28 Gun Bad Boy and Black Secret Technology explored breakbeat, jungle and drum and bass. The Haçienda hosted his early performances in Manchester during the acid-house era. He later took hardware-based live sets into clubs and festivals, using drum machines, sequencers and synthesizers to reshape his material in performance. His appearances have included Berghain in Berlin and Dekmantel Festival in Amsterdam.
