Artist
Spanish Harlem Orchestra is an American salsa ensemble founded in New York City in 2000 by pianist and arranger Oscar Hernández. The group plays salsa dura rooted in the city’s mambo and Afro-Cuban traditions, and is known for albums including Un Gran Día en el Barrio, Across 110th Street and United We Swing. Its recordings have received multiple Grammy Awards. Spanish Harlem Orchestra has brought its repertoire to concert halls and jazz festivals outside its New York base. Its international appearances have included the North Sea Jazz Festival and the Montreal International Jazz Festival, extending the orchestra’s live work well beyond the Latin dance circuit. The concert lineup is a large ensemble of singers, brass, piano, bass and Afro-Cuban percussion. The musicians perform under the direction of Oscar Hernández, who leads the orchestra from the piano.
