the Garifuna Collective in Berlin

The Garifuna Collective is a Belizean ensemble devoted to Garifuna music, drawing on punta and paranda rhythms, hand percussion, guitars and call-and-response vocals. The group became widely known through its work with singer Andy Palacio on the album Wátina, then released its own records including Ayo and Aban. In 2007, the musicians toured internationally with Andy Palacio following the release of Wátina. After his death, the ensemble carried that repertoire into its own tours and later performed songs from Ayo for an NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert in Washington, D.C.
