Artist
The Hidden Cameras are a Canadian indie-pop collective formed in Toronto in 2001 and led by singer-songwriter Joel Gibb. Their music pairs melodic pop and choral arrangements with explicitly queer lyrics; key releases include The Smell of Our Own, Mississauga Goddam and the song “Ban Marriage.” The group staged early performances at the Church of St. Stephen-in-the-Fields, establishing a concert history that also included galleries and other unconventional rooms. After signing to Rough Trade, they toured clubs and theatres in Europe and North America around successive album releases. Their shows use an ensemble built around Gibb’s voice and guitar, frequently adding strings, percussion, group singing and masked go-go dancers. Their festival appearances have included Glastonbury Festival and Barcelona’s Primavera Sound.
