Special Consensus is an American bluegrass band founded in Chicago in 1975 by banjo player Greg Cahill. The group plays acoustic bluegrass built around banjo, guitar, mandolin, upright bass and close vocal harmonies. Its catalogue includes the albums Scratch Gravel Road, Rivers and Roads and Chicago Barn Dance. Special Consensus has toured for decades through changing lineups led by Cahill, performing at the Grand Ole Opry and making repeated trips to the United Kingdom and Ireland. The group has also incorporated educational performances into its road work through the Traditional American Music Program, introducing bluegrass instruments and history in schools.
