The Thing is a Swedish-Norwegian free-jazz trio formed in 1999 by saxophonist Mats Gustafsson, bassist Ingebrigt Håker Flaten and drummer Paal Nilssen-Love. Conceived around the music of Don Cherry, the group developed a repertoire that joined open improvisation to pieces associated with rock and punk; its key recordings include Garage, Mono and Boot! A 2001 performance at Blå in Oslo with Joe McPhee was documented on She Knows.... The trio later recorded Shinjuku Crawl with Otomo Yoshihide at Tokyo’s Shinjuku Pit Inn, extending its concert work through guest improvisers. Its collaboration with Neneh Cherry produced The Cherry Thing and brought the musicians onto the road together as Neneh Cherry & The Thing.
