Autopsy is an American death metal band formed in California’s Contra Costa County in 1987 by drummer and vocalist Chris Reifert after his departure from Death. Its music pairs raw, grisly death metal with slow, doom-heavy passages; the albums Severed Survival and Mental Funeral, and songs including “Charred Remains” and “In the Grip of Winter,” are central to its catalogue.

After disbanding in 1995, Autopsy gave a reunion performance at Maryland Deathfest in Baltimore in 2010. The band subsequently returned to European festival stages, including an appearance at Roadburn Festival in Tilburg in 2012.
