About black midi
black midi was a British experimental rock band formed in London in 2017 by Geordie Greep, Cameron Picton, Morgan Simpson and Matt Kwasniewski-Kelvin. The group played rhythmically volatile rock rooted in math rock, post-punk and progressive rock. Its debut album, Schlagenheim, was nominated for the Mercury Prize; Cavalcade and Hellfire followed, while “bmbmbm,” “John L,” “Welcome to Hell” and “Sugar/Tzu” became key songs in its catalogue.
black midi played repeatedly at The Windmill in Brixton during its early years, becoming closely associated with the south London scene around the venue. In 2018, KEXP filmed the group at Kex Hostel during Iceland Airwaves, capturing the early lineup performing material that later appeared on Schlagenheim. The band subsequently toured clubs and theatres in Europe and North America and performed at Glastonbury and Primavera Sound.
