Black Star is an American hip-hop duo formed in New York by Yasiin Bey, then known as Mos Def, and Talib Kweli. Their 1998 album “Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star” paired socially conscious writing with jazz- and soul-rooted production, and included “Definition” and “Respiration.” They reunited for the Madlib-produced album “No Fear of Time” in 2022. In 2004, the duo performed at Dave Chappelle’s Block Party in Brooklyn, a concert documented in Michel Gondry’s film of the same name. They later reunited to perform their debut album in full on the 2011 Rock the Bells festival tour.
