Jamala in Arnstadt

Jamala is a Ukrainian singer and songwriter, born in Osh in 1983 and raised in Crimea. Her music draws on pop, jazz, soul, electronic music and Crimean Tatar traditions. She is best known for “1944,” the song with which she won the Eurovision Song Contest, while albums including For Every Heart, All or Nothing and Breath established her broader catalogue. In 2009, Jamala won the New Wave singing contest in Jūrmala, an early televised milestone in her live career. She represented Ukraine at the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest, performing “1944” at the Ericsson Globe in Stockholm, and returned to the competition as a guest performer when it was held in Kyiv the following year.
