Carl Craig & Moodymann in San Francisco

Carl Craig is an American producer and DJ, born in Detroit in 1969 and associated with the second wave of Detroit techno. He has recorded under names including 69 and Paperclip People, and his catalogue includes the albums Landcruising and More Songs About Food and Revolutionary Art, as well as the tracks “At Les” and “Throw.” He also founded the label Planet E Communications. In 2000, Craig served as artistic director of the inaugural Detroit Electronic Music Festival and performed at the event. He later developed Versus from a commission at Paris’s Cité de la Musique, recasting pieces from his catalogue for electronics and orchestra, and he has returned to his home city as a performer at Movement Detroit.

Moodymann is the recording name of American producer and DJ Kenny Dixon Jr. from Detroit. His house music draws on soul, funk, jazz and the city’s techno tradition; key releases include the albums Silentintroduction, Mahogany Brown and Black Mahogani, as well as the tracks “Shades of Jae” and “I Can’t Kick This Feeling When It Hits.” Moodymann has played Movement in his hometown, while his European festival appearances have included Dekmantel in Amsterdam and Sónar in Barcelona. Since 2007, he has also staged Soul Skate, an annual roller-skating party in Detroit built around his DJ sets.
