Paula Poundstone is an American stand-up comedian and author, born in Huntsville, Alabama, in 1959. Her comedy is known for observational monologues, quick improvisation and conversations with audience members. She has appeared in stand-up specials including Paula Poundstone: Cats, Cops and Stuff and is a longtime panelist on NPR’s Wait Wait... Don’t Tell Me!

In 1979, Poundstone began performing at open-mic nights in Boston before working in comedy clubs around the United States. HBO presented Paula Poundstone: Cats, Cops and Stuff in 1990, capturing the audience interaction that became central to her theatre shows. In 1992, she became the first woman to host the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
