About Afro Celt Sound System
Afro Celt Sound System is a British musical collective formed in 1995 by guitarist and producer Simon Emmerson. The group plays electronic world music shaped by West African rhythms and Celtic traditions. Its best-known recordings include the albums Volume 1: Sound Magic and Volume 3: Further in Time, as well as “Release” and the Peter Gabriel collaboration “When You’re Falling.”
Afro Celt Sound System first performed at WOMAD in 1995, turning the recording project into a touring ensemble. The group returned to WOMAD in later years and also performed at Glastonbury Festival.
The concert format uses a full ensemble built around percussion, kora, whistles, guitar, vocals and electronic programming. Its changing lineups have included longtime members N’Faly Kouyaté and James McNally.
