Attwenger are an Austrian experimental folk duo formed in Linz in 1990. Their music sets Styrian button accordion and Upper Austrian dialect vocals against drums, punk rhythms, hip-hop phrasing and electronics. Albums including Most, Luft, Sun and Drum established this approach, while BBC broadcaster John Peel invited the duo to record Peel Sessions. In the 1990s, Attwenger carried their live work as far as Zimbabwe and Siberia. Their later festival appearances included Glastonbury Festival and Roskilde Festival, extending a concert history built well beyond their home country. Their stage format centers on the two musicians: Hans-Peter Falkner plays accordion and sings, while Markus Binder handles drums, electronics and vocals.
