Audra McDonald is an American actor and singer, born in Berlin in 1970 and raised in Fresno, California. Her work encompasses Broadway musicals, dramatic plays and concert performances of musical-theatre songs and standards. She has won six Tony Awards and was the first performer to win in all four acting categories, for roles including Carousel, Master Class, Ragtime, A Raisin in the Sun, The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess and Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill.

In 1994, Audra McDonald played Carrie Pipperidge in the Broadway revival of Carousel and received her first Tony Award. She followed that production with Sharon Graham in Master Class and Sarah in the original Broadway production of Ragtime. In 2014 she portrayed Billie Holiday in Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill at the Circle in the Square Theatre, then returned to the role at Wyndham’s Theatre in 2017.

Her solo concert engagements have taken her into both concert halls and West End theatres, including Carnegie Hall in New York and the London Palladium.
