Ben Folds sings and plays piano, Robert Sledge plays bass, and Darren Jessee plays drums, creating a guitar-free sound built around piano-led power pop. Their albums include Ben Folds Five, Whatever and Ever Amen, The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner and The Sound of the Life of the Mind; “Brick,” from Whatever and Ever Amen, became their biggest hit. The trio reunited for a show in 2008 after splitting in 2000, then returned to recording in 2011. The Sound of the Life of the Mind was followed by a sold-out theatre tour, and later performances included shows with Cake and Violent Femmes.
