About Bobby McFerrin
Bobby McFerrin is an American vocalist, composer and conductor born in Manhattan in 1950. His music draws on vocal jazz, improvisation and classical music, and he is best known for the voice-only song “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” and the album Simple Pleasures. His recordings also include Hush, a collaboration with cellist Yo-Yo Ma.
The 1986 live album Spontaneous Inventions documented Bobby McFerrin’s solo concert method, built on vocal improvisation, body percussion and audience participation. During the same period he formed Voicestra, an ensemble devoted to improvised vocal music. In 1994 he became creative chair of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, bringing conducting and orchestral programs into his live work.
