Boston Symphony Orchestra in Boston

The Boston Symphony Orchestra is an American symphonic ensemble founded in Boston in 1881 with principal support from banker Henry Lee Higginson. Its extensive recording history includes performances of John Williams’s scores for Schindler’s List and Saving Private Ryan, while its musicians also form the Boston Pops light-music orchestra. Symphony Hall opened in 1900 and became the orchestra’s Boston home. During Serge Koussevitzky’s tenure, it gave the world premieres of Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms and Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra, and established an annual festival and training program at Tanglewood.
