Bratmobile is an American punk band formed in 1991 and closely associated with Olympia’s riot grrrl movement. Allison Wolfe, Molly Neuman and Erin Smith established the group’s guitar-and-drums sound, heard on the debut album Pottymouth and songs including “Cool Schmool” and “Gimme Brains.” Later releases included Ladies, Women and Girls and Girls Get Busy. In 1991, Bratmobile performed at the International Pop Underground Convention, including its opening night devoted to women-led bands. After the group’s 1994 split, it reunited in 1999 and played the first Ladyfest the following year. Bratmobile disbanded again in 2003, then returned to the stage in 2023 at Mosswood Meltdown in Oakland.
Hammered Hulls are an American punk band formed in Washington, D.C., in 2018 by vocalist Alec MacKaye, guitarist Mark Cisneros, bassist Mary Timony and drummer Chris Wilson. Their taut post-hardcore is captured on the 2022 album Careening, which includes “Boiled in Oil” and “Rights and Reproduction.” In 2023, the band performed a Tiny Desk concert, playing material from the record in its four-piece lineup. The filmed set documents Hammered Hulls performing together at NPR.
