Artist
Charles Lloyd is an American jazz saxophonist, flutist and composer born in Memphis in 1938. He became widely known through his 1960s quartet with Keith Jarrett, Cecil McBee and Jack DeJohnette, whose open post-bop sound is documented on Dream Weaver and the concert album Forest Flower. His later catalogue includes a long series of recordings for ECM, beginning with Fish Out of Water. The Charles Lloyd Quartet’s 1966 performance at the Monterey Jazz Festival was recorded for Forest Flower, and the group followed it with international touring that included a 1967 visit to the Soviet Union. After spending much of the 1970s away from the jazz circuit, he returned to performing in the 1980s with pianist Michel Petrucciani. His subsequent concert groups have included the New Quartet with Jason Moran, Reuben Rogers and Eric Harland, and The Marvels with Bill Frisell and Greg Leisz.
