Carmen Souza is a Portuguese singer and songwriter of Cape Verdean heritage, born in Lisbon in 1981. She performs vocal jazz grounded in Cape Verdean morna, coladeira and funaná, singing principally in Cape Verdean Creole. Her albums include Ess ê Nha Cabo Verde, Protegid, Kachupada and Creology; The Silver Messengers interprets the music of Horace Silver. Live at Lagny Jazz Festival documents Carmen Souza in a small-group concert setting, singing and playing guitar and piano. The recording features her longtime collaborator, bassist Theo Pas'cal, who has also accompanied her on international tours.
