Devendra Banhart in Minneapolis

Devendra Banhart is a Venezuelan-American singer-songwriter and visual artist, born in Houston in 1981 and raised partly in Caracas before settling in Los Angeles. His idiosyncratic folk music became associated with the freak-folk movement through albums including Rejoicing in the Hands, Cripple Crow and Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon; “Carmensita” and “Baby” are among his best-known songs. In 2004, Devendra Banhart joined Joanna Newsom and Vetiver on the tour connected to the compilation The Golden Apples of the Sun, which he curated. Concerts around Cripple Crow then featured the Hairy Fairy Band, while later tours behind Mala, Ape in Pink Marble and Ma took his catalogue through clubs, theatres and festivals. Based in Los Angeles for much of his career, he has performed at Coachella in Indio and Primavera Sound in Barcelona.
