Elvis Crespo is a Puerto Rican merengue singer, born in New York City and raised in Puerto Rico. He first became known as a member of Grupo Manía before beginning a solo career with the album Suavemente. Its title track became his signature song, while “Tu Sonrisa” and “Píntame” further established his fast, dance-led approach to merengue.

In 1999, Elvis Crespo performed at the Festival Internacional de la Canción de Viña del Mar as Suavemente reached audiences beyond the Caribbean. He went on to present his repertoire with a full tropical band at festivals, civic celebrations and concert venues, returning repeatedly to Latin music audiences in San Juan and Miami.
