Gaither Vocal Band is an American southern gospel vocal group formed in 1981 by singer-songwriter Bill Gaither. Originally billed as the New Gaither Vocal Band, the group became known for close male harmonies and recordings such as “He Came Down to My Level,” “Alpha and Omega” and “Sometimes It Takes a Mountain.” In 1991, the singers took part in the first Gaither Homecoming recording, beginning a long association with the concert and video series. They later toured churches, theatres and arenas, while the Gaither Vocal Band Reunion concerts brought former members back to perform material associated with different lineups. Concerts are built around alternating solo leads and ensemble harmonies backed by a live band. The repertoire includes hymns, gospel standards and songs written by Bill and Gloria Gaither, while Bill Gaither sings bass and introduces the music and performers.
