George Coleman in Cambridge

George Coleman is an American jazz saxophonist, born in Memphis in 1935, whose playing draws on bebop, hard bop and post-bop. He is known for his work in Miles Davis’s quintet on Seven Steps to Heaven, My Funny Valentine and Four & More, and for appearing on Herbie Hancock’s Maiden Voyage. In 1963, George Coleman toured Europe with Miles Davis’s quintet, including the Antibes concert preserved on Miles in Europe. A Philharmonic Hall performance the following year produced the recordings issued as My Funny Valentine and Four & More. He later led his own groups, and the album At Yoshi’s documented his quartet at the Oakland club.
