Gunma Symphony Orchestra in Sumida

Gunma Symphony Orchestra is a Japanese professional orchestra based in Takasaki and founded in 1945. Its postwar work bringing orchestral music to communities across the prefecture inspired the 1955 film Koko ni Izumi Ari, which drew on the ensemble’s early history. Gunma Symphony Orchestra built its concert tradition through travelling performances for schools and communities around Gunma Prefecture, followed by a long-running subscription series at Gunma Music Center. After Takasaki City Theatre opened, the orchestra made the new hall its performance base; its work farther afield included concerts in Tokyo at Suntory Hall.
