Hypnotic Brass Ensemble is an American brass group formed in Chicago in 1999 by eight sons of jazz trumpeter Phil Cohran. The band plays jazz-funk and hip-hop built around trumpets, trombones, euphonium, sousaphone and percussion, and is known for recordings including “War,” “Ballicki Bone” and the album Bulletproof Brass. The musicians established their live practice by performing on streets and subway platforms in New York. In 2010 they joined the touring ensemble for Gorillaz’s Escape to Plastic Beach World Tour, which took them into arenas and included the headline performance at Glastonbury Festival.
