Ian Paice is an English rock drummer, born in Nottingham in 1948, and a founding member of Deep Purple. The only musician to have served in every lineup of the band, he played on recordings including “Smoke on the Water,” “Highway Star” and the album Machine Head. His career also includes work with Whitesnake and Gary Moore. Deep Purple’s 1972 concerts in Osaka and Tokyo produced the live album Made in Japan, capturing Paice during the band’s Machine Head period. He later performed before a large outdoor audience at California Jam in 1974 and returned for the Perfect Strangers reunion tour in the 1980s. Away from Deep Purple, he has presented drum clinics and performed the band’s repertoire in concerts billed with Purpendicular.
