Inti-Illimani in Punta Arenas

Inti-Illimani is a Chilean folk ensemble formed in Santiago in 1967 and closely associated with the Nueva Canción movement. Their music draws on Andean traditions and instruments, and their best-known repertoire includes “Alturas,” “Vuelvo” and “Samba Landó.” In 1973, Inti-Illimani were touring Europe when the military coup left the musicians unable to return home. They settled in Italy and performed internationally throughout their exile, often appearing at concerts connected to Latin American political solidarity. The group returned to Chile in 1988 and resumed performing there. Their concerts feature ensemble singing, guitars and a broad range of acoustic instruments, including charango, quena, siku and panpipes. Those instruments keep the musical traditions of the Andes at the center of the performance.
