About Irma Thomas
Irma Thomas is an American soul and New Orleans R&B singer, born Irma Lee in Ponchatoula, Louisiana, in 1941 and known as the “Soul Queen of New Orleans.” Her early recordings include “It’s Raining,” “Ruler of My Heart,” “Wish Someone Would Care,” “Anyone Who Knows What Love Is” and “Time Is on My Side,” and she worked with songwriter-producer Allen Toussaint. Her 2006 album After the Rain won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album.
In the 1980s, Irma Thomas and her husband-manager opened the Lion’s Den in New Orleans, where she regularly headlined, and she also toured Europe. Her festival history includes appearances at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and two performances at Australia’s Byron Bay Bluesfest in 2011.
