John Rutter in Greensboro

John Rutter is a British composer and conductor, born in 1945, whose work centres on contemporary choral music. He is known for large-scale works including Gloria, Requiem and Magnificat, as well as Christmas pieces such as Shepherd’s Pipe Carol. In 1981, John Rutter founded the Cambridge Singers, the chamber choir he has conducted in concerts and on recordings devoted to his music and the wider choral repertory. His public conducting also included major seasonal programmes, notably John Rutter’s Christmas Celebration at London’s Royal Albert Hall.
