Juilliard String Quartet is an American chamber ensemble founded in New York in 1946. Its repertoire and recordings are closely associated with the string quartets of Beethoven, Bartók and Schoenberg, as well as works by modern American composers. In 1961, the quartet became the first American string quartet to tour the Soviet Union. Its international performances ran alongside a sustained commitment to new music: in 1973 it gave the world premiere of Elliott Carter’s String Quartet No. 3. The ensemble’s recitals and chamber-music teaching are also rooted in its long residence at the Juilliard School.
