Herlin Riley is an American jazz drummer, composer and bandleader born in New Orleans in 1957. His recordings with Wynton Marsalis include Majesty of the Blues and the Pulitzer Prize-winning Blood on the Fields. He made his bandleading debut with Watch What You’re Doing, followed by Cream of the Crescent, New Direction and Perpetual Optimism. From 1984 to 1987, Riley performed in Ahmad Jamal’s band. He later played in Marsalis’s ensembles and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, bringing his drumming to concert halls and jazz clubs. His club appearances have included Snug Harbor.
