The Kingston Trio is an American folk group formed in San Francisco in 1957 by Dave Guard, Bob Shane and Nick Reynolds. Its close vocal harmonies, acoustic guitars and banjo became central to recordings including “Tom Dooley,” “M.T.A.” and “Where Have All the Flowers Gone?” “Tom Dooley” reached No. 1 in the United States and brought the group to a national audience. The trio opened at the Purple Onion in 1957, where a short booking grew into a seven-month engagement. A performance at the hungry i was documented on the 1959 concert album The Kingston Trio at the hungry i, while extensive appearances at colleges and theatres followed. The original group also performed at the Newport Folk Festival in 1959.
