Li Yugang in Xuzhou

Li Yugang is a Chinese singer and stage performer, born in 1978, whose music draws on Mandarin pop, gufeng and female-role techniques associated with Chinese opera. He became widely known after placing third on CCTV’s Avenue of Stars in 2006. His signature songs include “The New Drunken Beauty” and “Just Met You.” In 2009, he gave a solo concert at the Sydney Opera House. He followed it with the theatrical concert Mirror Flower, Water Moon at Beijing’s Poly Theatre in 2010, then toured the music-and-dance production Portrait of the Four Beauties. His theatre performances use full costumes, choreographed movement and shifts between male and female vocal registers to portray historical characters. He developed that character-led format further in the stage production Lady Zhaojun.
