Lightning Bolt is an American noise-rock duo formed in Providence, Rhode Island, in 1994 by drummer and vocalist Brian Chippendale and bassist Brian Gibson. Their distorted bass, rapid drumming and processed vocals shaped albums including Wonderful Rainbow, Hypermagic Mountain and Sonic Citadel; “Dracula Mountain” and “2 Morro Morro Land” are among their best-known tracks. Fort Thunder, the Providence warehouse and arts space where the group developed, hosted their early floor-level performances. Their 2001 US tour was later documented in the concert film The Power of Salad & Milkshakes, capturing the duo in small venues and DIY spaces. The group performs as a two-piece, with Gibson routing bass through effects and Chippendale playing drums while singing. They have often set up on the venue floor among the audience, and the vocals pass through a contact microphone built into a mask worn by Brian Chippendale.
