Mari Boine is a Norwegian Sámi singer and songwriter, born in 1956 near Karasjok. She performs contemporary Sámi music rooted in joik, using folk, jazz and rock instrumentation. The album Gula Gula and its title song brought her work to audiences outside Sápmi; later releases include Eight Seasons, Idjagieđas and See the Woman. Mari Boine performed at WOMAD festivals after Real World Records issued Gula Gula internationally. The concert album Eallin documented her touring ensemble, and her festival history also includes Riddu Riđđu in northern Norway.
