About Maria Bethânia
Maria Bethânia is a Brazilian singer, born in 1946 in Santo Amaro, Bahia, whose work encompasses MPB and samba. Her low, dramatic voice and close attention to lyrics shaped recordings including the albums Álibi and Mel, while “Reconvexo” became a lasting part of her repertoire.
The 1965 production of Opinião gave her an early national showcase: she replaced Nara Leão and made “Carcará” a centerpiece of her performance. In 1971, Rosa dos Ventos, created with director Fauzi Arap, developed the combination of music, poetry and theatre that recurred throughout her stage work. Five years later, she toured with Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil and Gal Costa as Doces Bárbaros, a project documented on a live album and film.
She performed repeatedly in Salvador and Rio de Janeiro and presented many of her theatre productions in São Paulo.
