Mike Oldfield is an English multi-instrumentalist and composer, born in 1953, whose music draws on progressive rock, folk, ambient music and electronics. He is best known for the long-form instrumental album Tubular Bells, followed by works including Ommadawn and Crises and songs such as “Moonlight Shadow” and “To France.” Tubular Bells received its first concert performance at Queen Elizabeth Hall in 1973. The Exposed tour took him across Europe in 1979 and was documented on the live album and concert film of the same name; in 1992, he premiered Tubular Bells II at Edinburgh Castle. He appeared at the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games, performing music from Tubular Bells for the ceremony’s NHS sequence.
