About Moon Hooch
Moon Hooch is an American instrumental trio formed in Brooklyn in 2010. The group plays rhythm-driven jazz shaped by dance music and experimental electronics, a style its members have called “cave music.” Its best-known recordings include “Number 9” and the albums Moon Hooch, This Is Cave Music and Red Sky.
Moon Hooch’s earliest performances took place in subway stations, including the Bedford Avenue station. Mike Doughty encountered the group while it was busking and invited it to open on tour, moving the trio into clubs and theatres. A performance for NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Concert series later documented the same compact live setup.
The established stage format centers on two saxophonists and a drummer, supplemented by electronic processing and percussion. Traffic cones fitted into the saxophone bells have also become a practical part of the group’s low-register sound. That trio format was built around Wenzl McGowen and Mike Wilbur on saxophones and James Muschler on drums.
