Nappy Roots in Pinehurst

Nappy Roots are an American Southern hip-hop group formed in Bowling Green, Kentucky, by students at Western Kentucky University in 1995. Their major-label debut, Watermelon, Chicken & Gritz, produced the signature songs “Awnaw” and “Po’ Folks”; later releases included Wooden Leather and the single “Good Day.” In 2002, Nappy Roots joined Jay-Z, 311 and N.E.R.D. on the Sprite Liquid Mix Tour, taking their multi-MC performances to amphitheatres across the United States. Years later, the group performed “Po’ Folks,” “Good Day” and “Awnaw” for NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert.
