Nate Smith in Portsmouth

Nate Smith is an American drummer, composer and producer, born in Chesapeake, Virginia, in 1974. His music draws on jazz, funk and soul, and his work as a bandleader includes the albums Kinfolk: Postcards from Everywhere, Pocket Change and Kinfolk 2: See the Birds. Nate Smith spent years performing in ensembles led by Dave Holland and Chris Potter before taking his own KINFOLK project onstage. His bandleading work has reached jazz clubs and festivals, while a performance by Nate Smith + KINFOLK at NPR Tiny Desk documented the ensemble in a close-room setting.
