About Oumou Sangaré
Oumou Sangaré is a Malian singer, born in Bamako in 1968, who performs Wassoulou music rooted in southern Mali. Her debut album, Moussolou, introduced songs addressing women’s lives and social freedom; later records include Worotan, Seya, Mogoya and Timbuktu.
As a teenager, she toured Europe and the Caribbean with the percussion group Djoliba before establishing her solo career. She later performed at WOMAD and toured internationally with a full band featuring guitar, bass, percussion and the kamalengoni. In 2022, she brought that format to the West Holts stage at Glastonbury Festival.
