Protomartyr is an American post-punk band formed in Detroit in 2008. Joe Casey’s low, spoken-sung delivery and Greg Ahee’s jagged guitar work shape records including Agent Intellect, Relatives in Descent and Formal Growth in the Desert; “Why Does It Shake?,” “A Private Understanding” and “Pontiac 87” are among the group’s best-known songs. Protomartyr toured North America and Europe after releasing Agent Intellect, then returned to clubs and theatres for Relatives in Descent. Concerts supporting Ultimate Success Today followed pandemic-era postponements, and the band later toured Formal Growth in the Desert. Festival appearances have included Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago and Primavera Sound in Barcelona.
