Pussy Riot is a Russian feminist protest-art collective formed in Moscow in 2011. Its work draws on punk, electronic pop and performance art, pairing music with opposition to authoritarianism and support for feminist and LGBTQ+ causes. The collective became widely known after its 2012 “Punk Prayer: Mother of God, Drive Putin Away” performance at the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, which led to the imprisonment of several members; later releases include “Straight Outta Vagina” and “Police State.” Riot Days began touring in 2017, led by Maria Alyokhina and built from her prison memoir. The stage production combines spoken testimony, video and live punk music; after appearing at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, it toured theatres and clubs in the United States and Germany.
